"McCormick is a national leader in making design a key to learning how to think as an effective engineer. Our women and men develop these habits of mind because they know their work must be people centered, must involve the latest technologies, and must be based on solid analysis. 'Designing engineer' seems a most appropriate characterization of a McCormick graduate."

Stephen H. Carr,
Associate Dean for undergraduate engineering
A Culture of Design

The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center

At Northwestern University and the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, we educate students to be effective communicators and innovative engineers.

To support the culture of design that permeates our uniquely focused curriculum, we need open, flexible, barrier-free space; an environmentally sound structure that is visually open; and facilities that encourage interdisciplinary, team-based learning.

The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center is a place dedicated to teaching the importance of design throughout an engineering curriculum and will move us closer to achieving our vision — so well stated by philanthropist Walter P. Murphy — to become “second to none.”
